Summary of evidence and Expert Committee recommendations
The Expert Committee noted that subfertility is a common problem which can cause considerable distress, that there is a Cochrane Review (1) that demonstrates the effectiveness of clomifene (NNT = 2.74) but no WHO clinical guidelines on infertility treatment, and thirdly, that clomifene is listed on 20 of 25 national essential medicines lists. The committee recommended that clomifene be retained on the Model List but moved to the complementary list (in view of the need for specialist care) and its square box symbol removed.
